Development & Background

The first fully fly-by-wire jet in its class

The Embraer Legacy 500 was launched in 2014 as the first fully fly-by-wire business jet in its class, setting a new standard for precision handling, passenger comfort, and technological sophistication.

Embraer's vision for the Legacy 500 began in the mid-2000s, following the success of the Legacy 600, derived from the ERJ regional jet platform. It was positioned to compete against the Citation Sovereign and Challenger 300, but with lower operating costs and a higher performance threshold. Engineers gave the Legacy 500 advanced composite materials, a high-aspect-ratio swept wing, and an entirely new pressurized fuselage built for a flat-floor cabin — something no other jet in its segment had achieved at the time.

Pilots were given the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics suite integrated with a triple-redundant fly-by-wire system, providing envelope protection, reduced pilot workload, and an ultra-smooth ride by electronically controlling every control surface. Testing began in 2012, and by 2014 the aircraft entered service to wide acclaim for its quiet cabin, precision handling, and innovative cabin design.

Cabin & Interior Experience

A flat floor and the lowest cabin altitude in class

Step inside the Legacy 500's cabin and you'll notice Embraer's attention to detail. Measuring 6 feet tall and 6.9 feet wide, the cabin offers a flat-floor design, a fully equipped refreshment galley, and seating for up to 9 passengers in fully reclining, swiveling club seats finished with premium materials from Embraer's DNA Design Collection.

Large windows provide abundant natural light, while the lowest cabin altitude in its class (6,000 ft at 45,000 ft) keeps passengers comfortable on long flights. Optional amenities include Ka-band Wi-Fi, touchscreen cabin management, HD entertainment, and a fully enclosed lavatory, plus an in-flight-accessible baggage compartment holding up to 150 cubic feet — a standout advantage in its class.

Capabilities & Performance

Fly-by-wire stability at 45,000 feet

Powered by two Honeywell HTF7500E turbofan engines producing 7,036 lbs of thrust each, the Legacy 500 delivers an ideal balance of speed, range, and efficiency, covering 3,125 nautical miles at a maximum cruise speed of 466 KTAS. With a service ceiling of 45,000 feet, it climbs to 43,000 feet in under 20 minutes. Its fly-by-wire flight system provides exceptional stability and control, particularly in turbulent conditions, while the optimized wing and T-tail configuration enhance lift efficiency and reduce drag.
