Development & Background

Re-engineered from the Gulfstream V

The Gulfstream G550 traces its lineage back to the Gulfstream V, introduced in 1995. While the G550 looks similar to the GV, it went through a comprehensive re-engineering to enhance range, improve situational awareness, and integrate more intelligent flight management systems.

Gulfstream’s initial testing for the G550 took place in Savannah, Georgia, using extensive computational fluid dynamics simulations and wind-tunnel testing to reduce drag while improving high-speed efficiency. Gulfstream also introduced the PlaneView cockpit — a groundbreaking suite integrating four large LCD displays, enhanced navigation systems, and the Enhanced Vision System (EVS), a forward-looking infrared camera that lets pilots see terrain and obstacles in low-visibility conditions.

Gulfstream equipped the G550 with two Rolls-Royce BR710-C4-11 engines. This upgrade provided better climb rates thanks to an additional 1,000 lbs of thrust compared to the GV, along with reduced fuel burn and longer range through higher thrust efficiency. In all, the G550's range grew 250 nautical miles beyond the GV, alongside reduced operational costs.

"The G550 feels less like a jet and more like a five-star suite in the sky — quiet, bright, and endlessly capable."

Cabin & Interior Experience

A sanctuary at 51,000 feet

Step inside the G550 and you're greeted with a spacious, flat-floor, stand-up cabin that feels like a sanctuary at 51,000 ft. Multiple seating zones can be customized for work, dining, or rest, with signature panoramic windows flooding the cabin with natural light and a fresh-air system that minimizes fatigue on long-haul flights.

Passengers get high-speed Wi-Fi, satellite communications, entertainment systems, and a full galley option for onboard dining. Typical configurations include 14 to 19 passengers, with lie-flat sleeping for up to eight. Optional layouts provide a private stateroom, an enclosed lavatory, and additional baggage access during flight — the 226-cubic-foot baggage compartment holds multiple suitcases, golf bags, and skis.

Capabilities & Performance

Intercontinental reach, short-field versatility

The G550 delivers intercontinental reach and short-field versatility, able to depart smaller airports like Aspen or Geneva and still reach long-haul destinations nonstop. Typical routes include New York to Dubai, Los Angeles to Shanghai, or Paris to Buenos Aires.

Thanks to Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and an advanced wing design, the G550 climbs to altitude quickly, cruises efficiently at Mach 0.87, and offers fuel burn rates roughly 10% lower than comparable aircraft in its class. The PlaneView flight deck and Enhanced Vision System ensure world-class operational safety even in challenging weather and terrain.
