Development & Background

The first jet with Gulfstream's Symmetry Flight Deck

The Gulfstream G500 was first announced in 2014 as a replacement for the earlier Gulfstream G450. Development began at Gulfstream's Savannah, Georgia facility, where engineers spent thousands of hours on computational fluid dynamics modeling and wind-tunnel analysis to redefine the aerodynamic surfaces of the wing. The G500 was also the first aircraft to use the Symmetry Flight Deck, powered by Honeywell's Primus Epic avionics suite, featuring 10 touchscreen displays, active control sidesticks, and fly-by-wire technology — all of which significantly reduced pilot workload while improving flight precision and safety.

Engineers gave the G500 two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines, each producing 15,144 lbs of thrust. The aircraft was tested extensively in Arctic, desert, and high-elevation environments to prove reliability across global operating conditions.

The G500's interior was designed in parallel with the new Gulfstream Cabin Management System — a fully digital, touchscreen-controlled environment letting passengers manage lighting, temperature, and entertainment from personal devices. During testing, the G500 achieved a range of 5,300 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, surpassing Gulfstream's own projections. It was certified by both the FAA and EASA in 2018, with deliveries beginning shortly after.

"The G500's cabin feels more like an art piece in motion — silent, spacious, and brilliantly connected."
