Development & Background
The Dassault Falcon 900 series stands as one of the most iconic business-jet families in aviation history. Built around a unique tri-engine configuration, the Falcon 900, 900B, 900EX, and 900LX deliver a combination of short-field access, true intercontinental range, refined cabin comfort, and legacy reliability.
The series traces back to the original Dassault Falcon 50, keeping the same trijet configuration and military-jet engineering derived from Dassault's fighter programs. The original Falcon 900 was introduced in 1984 as a replacement for the Falcon 50, featuring three Honeywell TFE731 engines in an S-duct center-engine configuration and advanced composite materials for weight savings. The fuselage was lengthened and widened compared to the Falcon 50, allowing 12- to 14-passenger layouts rather than the Falcon 50's eight seats, while delivering between 3,900 and 4,500 nm of range depending on the profile.
The Falcon 900B followed in 1991 with upgraded TFE731-5BR engines for modest range improvements and better performance from smaller fields, along with upgraded landing gear and avionics. The Falcon 900EX, introduced in the early 2000s, brought Honeywell TFE731-60 engines, redesigned engine nacelles and pylons, added fuel tank capacity, and the Honeywell Primus Epic suite with the EASy flight deck for better situational awareness and reduced pilot workload.
The Falcon 900LX, launched at EBACE in May 2008 and certified in July 2010, added high-Mach blended winglets for a 7% drag reduction and 10% better climb performance, extending range to nearly 4,750 nm while keeping the trijet design. It also introduced the FalconEye Combined Vision System, modern digital cabin management, and enhanced steep-approach and short-field performance.
